Easter in Sorrento

Discover the atmosphere of the Easter in Sorrento. The easter traditions of the Holy Week with the Famous Processions. In Sorrento, especially, there are two manifestations that take place on the Holy Friday.
The roots of these Processions are very old and probably go back to the 1500.

The first is organized by the Venerable Main Confraternity of S. Monica with seat in the very ancient and very precious Church of the Saint Annunziata. This is traditionally called "White Procession", because of the dresses' colour which those who take part wear. It takes place in the middle of the night between the Thursday and the Holy Friday.

This procession, by popular belief, tends to represent the exit of the Virgin looking for her Son captured and condemned to death. The starting time in the middle of the night; the visiting to the "Sepulchres"; the coming back to the church at the first dazzles of the new day, seem to strengthen this candid popular representation.

The second is organized by the Venerable main confraternity of the Death with seat in the noble Church of the Mary's Servants. It takes place in the evening of the Holy Friday.

The celebration of the Procession of the Death Christ represents the finding by Mary of her Son, dead on the cross; the participants in this case wear black habit and black hood, preceding the Statue of the Our Lady of Sorrow; a beautiful Simulacrum of the Dead Christ by an unknown sculpture is carried on shoulders.
